Nine industries reported year-over job gains

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County decreased over the month to 6.9 percent in August 2015 from a revised 7.2 percent in July 2015 and was below the rate of 8.1 one year ago. Civilian employment decreased by 4,000 to 4,709,000 in August 2015, while unemployment decreased by 17,000 to 347,000 over the month. The civilian labor force decreased by 22,000 over the month to 5,056,000 in August 2015. (All of the above figures are seasonally adjusted.) The unadjusted unemployment rate for the county was 7.0 percent in August 2015.

The California seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in August 2015, 6.2 percent in July 2015, and 7.4 percent a year ago in August 2014. The comparable estimates for the nation were 5.1 percent in August 2015, 5.3 percent in July 2015, and 6.1 percent a year ago.

Between July 2015 and August 2015, Los Angeles County total nonfarm employment increased by 7,900 jobs to reach 4,289,300.

  • An early start in the academic year for public educational institutions drove up government payrolls by 5,700 for the largest month-over industry employment increase. Job gains in information (up 4,000), that were concentrated in motion picture and sound recording (up 4,400) but offset by job reductions in smaller sectors, accounted for the second largest increase over the month.
  • Educational and health services (up 3,200) was driven up by payroll gains in health care and social assistance (up 4,600), but the job additions were reduced by a decline in private educational services (down 1,400) that were still in summer recess. Construction also posted a normal seasonal upturn with an addition of 1,100 jobs.
  • Professional and business services (down 3,600) posted the largest month-over job reduction. The bulk of the industry job losses were concentrated in employment services (down 3,400) which accounted for almost 95 percent of the decline.

Between August 2014 and August 2015, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County increased by 76,300 jobs, or 1.8 percent.

  • Educational and health services reported the largest year-over increase with an addition of 22,500 jobs. Health care and social assistance drove up payrolls by 23,300 but a drop of 800 jobs in educational services reduced the overall industry gain. Trade, transportation and utilities (up 17,100) had the second largest job expansion of the year with job growth across every major industry sector.
  • Leisure and hospitality (up 16,800) reported the third largest year-over employment upsurge. The bulk of the job growth was concentrated in accommodation and food services (up 13,300). Other industries with notable jobs additions over the year included government (up 7,500), professional and business services increased (up 6,500), and construction (up 6,200).
  • Manufacturing continues on its long term employment decline with a reduction of 4,700 jobs. Mining and logging was down by 300 jobs over the year.
